Mitch Thompkins- Superintendent

Mitch graduated from Horry Georgetown Technical College with a degree in Agriculture and a major in Golf Course Management. He began his career in the golf industry in 1989 and upon graduation in 1991 he became Assistant Superintendent at a leading local golf course where he was the course’s Spray/Chemical Technician. In 1993, he was promoted to Golf Course Superintendent and oversaw all day-to-day operations of the Golf Course.

In May of 1994, Mitch transferred to Caledonia Golf and Fish Club during the grow-in phase of the golf course. Once the course opened, Mitch stayed on as Assistant Golf Course Superintendent.  With over 30 years of valuable experience in the golf industry, Mitch and his family reopened Wedgefield Country Club and significantly improved the condition of the course.  

With the new ownership team in place as of October 1st, 2021, Mitch is now solely focused on making Wedgefield Country Club a golf course facility which will be recognized as one of the premiere golf destinations on the Grand Strand and beyond. Mitch is a lifelong resident of Georgetown and has been married to his wife of 39 years, Jamie Thompkins. They have 2 daughters.

 Amie Philo- Head Golf Professional

Amie Philo accepted the position of Head Golf Professional at Wedgefield Country Club in September 2019. Amie has been in the golf business her entire life, having grown up the daughter of Lifetime PGA Member David Philo.

Amie is a graduate of Coastal Carolina University as well as a member of the PGA of America.  Amie's career began at the Lake Placid Club in Lake Placid, NY and her career has led her to many top courses throughout the country, and she brings valuable experience and leadership to Wedgfield CC.  Throughout her career Amie also was actively involved in the The Golf Center, a family business for the last 30 years. 

Amie and her husband Richard Morris are local residents and enjoy living in Pawleys Island. Amie is excited for the future and is grateful to be a part of the Wedgefield family. 


Stephen Speirs- Teaching Golf Professional

Stephen was born and raised near Turnberry, Scotland where he developed a passion for golf at an early age.  He moved to Australia at 15 years old and represented the state in elite amateur golf.  Stephen advanced to eventually represent Australia in international play and played to +4 handicap before turning professional, and later started his golf internship at the renowned Machrihanish Golf Club in Scotland, where he learned the inner workings of the golf business including building and repairing golf clubs and related golf responsibilities.  Stephen graduated to a prestigious teaching position at Trump Turnberry Resort where he advanced his teaching skills to a master level.  

Today Stephen is a well-respected teacher within the golf community and a great asset to Wedgefield Country Club.  Stephens calm demeanor and great personality combined with extensive golf knowledge and experience make him an excellent resource for the community, from those looking to learn the basics of golf to the scratch golfer looking to improve the finer skills and master their game.
